House Guide

Garbage & Recycling

The house has three bins and one electronics box (elbox), provided by Borgholm Energi. Each bin has compartments — please sort your waste into the correct side. The icons on each bin lid show what goes where.

Bin sorting overview

Bin 1 — Food waste & Residual waste

This bin has two compartments with a fixed divider.

Food waste (matavfall) — left side

  • Food scraps (cooked and raw), fruit and vegetable peels
  • Coffee grounds, filters, and tea bags
  • Eggshells, fish and meat bones, shellfish shells
  • Small amounts of cooking fat (butter, margarine)

Important: Always use the paper bags supplied by Borgholm Energi. You will find refills under the kitchen sink. Do not use plastic bags for food waste.

Residual waste (restavfall) — right side

  • Tissues, cotton pads, cotton buds
  • Diapers, sanitary products
  • Vacuum cleaner bags
  • Pens, toothbrushes, dish sponges
  • Anything that does not fit another category

Put residual waste in a plastic bag tied with a double knot.

Bin 2 — Paper packaging & Plastic packaging

This bin has two compartments.

Paper packaging (pappersförpackningar)

  • Cardboard boxes (flatten them)
  • Milk and juice cartons (rinse and flatten)
  • Paper bags, egg cartons

Plastic packaging (plastförpackningar)

  • Plastic bottles and containers (rinse)
  • Plastic bags, wrappers, cling film
  • Tubes (e.g. toothpaste, ketchup)

Place packaging loose in the bin — do not bag it. Small plastic pieces may be collected in a plastic bag tied with a double knot.

Bin 3 — Glass, Metal & Newspapers

This bin has four compartments. Check the lid markings.

Clear glass (ofärgat glas)

  • Clear glass bottles and jars

Colored glass (färgat glas)

  • Green, brown, or blue glass bottles and jars

Remove caps and lids — sort those as metal or plastic packaging.

Metal packaging (metallförpackningar)

  • Food cans, aluminum foil, metal lids and caps
  • Empty spray cans

Newspapers & magazines (tidningar)

  • Newspapers, magazines, advertising flyers, catalogues
  • Uncoated paper (not packaging)

Electronics Box (Elbox)

A small box for hazardous small items:

  • Batteries (all household types)
  • Light bulbs and LED lamps
  • Small electronics (chargers, cables, broken small devices)

Store the elbox indoors between collections. When it needs emptying, hang it on any bin before collection day.

Quick rules

RuleWhy
Food waste → paper bags onlyPlastic contaminates the biogas process
Residual waste → plastic bag, double knotProtects collection workers
Packaging → loose in the binEasier to sort at the facility
Rinse containers before recyclingReduces odor and contamination
Flatten boxes and cartonsSaves space in the bin
Do not move the bin dividersThey are fixed for collection

When in doubt

If you are unsure where something goes, put it in residual waste (Bin 1, right side). That is always a safe choice.

Before check-out

Please take out all trash and make sure the bin lids can close. See the check-out guide for the full departure checklist.
