Trollskogen (the Enchanted Forest) is a nature reserve at the northeastern tip of Öland where wind-sculpted pines, lichen-draped oaks, and creeping ivy create an atmosphere straight out of a storybook. The reserve’s most famous resident is Trolleken — Öland’s oldest oak, gnarled and hollow with age.

Beyond the forest, the eastern shore reveals a dramatic shingle beach where the wreck of the schooner Swiks has rested since it ran aground in December 1926. The crew of seven escaped, but the hull remains half-buried in the stones — a striking photo spot. On the sheltered western side, Grankullaviken bay opens into grazed meadows where cattle roam freely. Scattered among the trees you will find Iron Age cairns, stone circles, and remnants of 16th-century fortifications.

  • Do not remove stones or parts of the Swiks wreck.
  • Cycling is allowed only on the central forest road, not on the hiking trails.

Combine with a visit to nearby Neptuni åkrar, Långe Erik lighthouse at Öland’s northernmost point, or the sandy beaches at Böda.
