Sweden's Orchid Island

Sweden's Orchid Island

Öland is home to around 35 orchid species and subspecies — roughly two-thirds of all orchids found in Sweden. This remarkable concentration has earned the island its reputation as one of Europe’s finest orchid destinations, drawing botanists and wildflower enthusiasts from across the continent.

The secret lies in Öland’s geology. The island’s limestone bedrock creates calcareous grasslands and alvar landscapes with thin, nutrient-poor soil — harsh conditions that paradoxically support an extraordinary diversity of specialised plants. The UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Stora Alvaret alone hosts over 600 plant species.

Orchids You Might See

  • Sankt Pers nycklar (Early Purple Orchid) — one of the most common, blooming across meadows in May-June
  • Adam och Eva (Elder-flowered Orchid) — comes in both yellow and purple forms
  • Flugblomster (Fly Orchid) — masters of deception, mimicking insects to attract pollinators
  • Militärorkidé (Military Orchid) — elegant spires on calcareous grasslands

Peak bloom runs from late May through early July, with the greatest variety in June.

Best Viewing Spots

  • Stora Alvaret — the island’s most iconic orchid habitat
  • Halltorps hage — one of Sweden’s most species-rich nature reserves, orchids among ancient oaks
  • Vickleby Alvar and Penåsa Alvar — both host guided orchid walks
  • Karum nature reserve — 54 hay meadows with a 3 km hiking trail (Karumleden)

Guided Orchid Walks

Organised walks are offered through Ölands Natur (bookable at bokaoland.se), typically in May and early June:

  • Vickleby Alvar — ~2 hours, 200 SEK/person
  • Penåsa Alvar — covers orchids, geology, and cultural history

Good to Know

  • All orchids in Sweden are legally protected. Never pick, dig up, or disturb them.
  • Stay on marked paths and step carefully to avoid trampling.
  • A close-up camera lens is more rewarding than binoculars for orchid viewing.

Other Botanical Highlights

Öland’s unique flora goes beyond orchids:

  • Ölandssolvända — the island’s official landscape flower, a small rock-rose found only on Öland
  • Alvarmalört — an endemic wormwood exclusive to Öland
  • Fältsippa (Pasque flower) — endangered, with Sweden’s largest population at Karum

Time your visit for early June to catch the peak of the orchid season, ideally combined with a guided walk.
