A Scenic Coastal Road Through Stone Country

Horns kustväg is a narrow gravel road winding along the western coast of northern Öland, stretching just over 30 km between Byrum and Äleklinta. The road follows the crest of the limestone escarpment (landborgen) with the Kalmar Strait on one side and the alvar landscape on the other — one of the most atmospheric drives on the island.

The road has appeared on maps since the 1600s but is likely much older, originally serving the stone industry that shaped this coast. Today it is an unhurried journey through a landscape of sea stacks, fishing villages, and geological wonders.

Highlights Along the Way

Driving south to north, notable stops include:

  • Äleklinta and Djupvik — the southern entry, with views across the strait
  • Sandvik — old fishing village and stone industry centre with marina, cafés, and one of the world’s largest windmills (built 1856)
  • Jordhamns skurkvarn — Sweden’s only preserved wind-driven scouring mill (built 1905)
  • Gillberga quarry — walls up to 17 metres high representing 17 million years of geological history
  • Alvedsjöbodar — thatched-roof stone fishing huts with views of Blå Jungfrun island
  • Horns udde — a dramatic promontory cape with crashing waves
  • Byrums raukar — 120 limestone sea stacks along the shore

Practical Details

  • Distance from the house: The southern end (Äleklinta) is ~20-25 km north, about 30 minutes by car. The full route extends to Byrum, ~45-50 km north.
  • Road surface: Narrow unpaved gravel — drive slowly and enjoy the views
  • Duration: Allow 2-3 hours to drive the full route with stops
  • Entry: Free

Driving vs Cycling

The road works well by car at low speeds. For cyclists, a gravel bike is recommended over a standard road bike due to the unpaved surface. The relatively flat terrain makes it manageable for reasonably fit riders.

Good to Know

  • The west-facing coast makes this road magical at sunset — plan your drive for late afternoon if you can.
  • Cafés and restaurants in Sandvik and nearby Löttorp offer good lunch and fika options.
  • Active quarrying still occurs east of the road in places — follow any posted signs.
  • March-April is notable for migrating seabirds, including large flocks of long-tailed ducks.

You can drive just the scenic 8 km highlight section between Äleklinta and Horns udde, or take your time with the full 30 km route.
