Blå Jungfrun (Blue Maiden) is an uninhabited granite dome rising 86 metres out of the sea between Öland and the mainland — a national park since 1926 and one of Sweden’s most mythical places. According to legend, this is Blåkulla, where witches gathered each Maundy Thursday for their Easter Sabbath. Archaeological excavations in 2014 found evidence of ritual use stretching back 9,000 years.

The island’s name is actually a euphemism — sailors called it “Blue Maiden” to avoid provoking whatever dark forces might dwell there.

What to See

A 3.3 km circular trail covers the entire island, from glacier-smoothed bare rock to dense hardwood forest. The Trojeborg stone labyrinth on the southern side is the most iconic feature — an ancient spiral linked to pagan ceremonies. Several caves show signs of ancient ritual use, and the island’s waters are sometimes visited by seals.

Good to Know

  • Sturdy shoes are essential — the terrain is steep, stony, and slippery when wet.
  • Tours are weather dependent and may be cancelled in bad conditions.
  • Do not take stones — legend says taking even a small stone brings bad luck until you return it. Oskarshamn receives stolen stones mailed back every year.
  • No fires, no camping (except by pre-booking designated wind shelters).
  • No shops or restaurants on the island — bring food and water.
  • Book early — tours sell out on popular days.

A truly unique day trip that feels like stepping into another world. Check weather and book ahead.
