Öland’s position in the Baltic migration corridor and its mix of coastal meadows, wetlands, alvars, and deciduous groves make it one of Sweden’s — and Europe’s — finest birdwatching destinations. An astonishing 472 species have been recorded on the island. While Ottenby at the southern tip gets most of the fame, excellent birding spots are scattered across the whole island, including several close to the house.

Hotspots Near Borgholm

Beijershamn (~20 km south) — A failed 1850s harbour that silted up and became one of Öland’s richest bird habitats, with ~260 species recorded. Bird towers, observation platforms, and a handicap-accessible 2 km trail. Outstanding for both breeding season and migration.

Halltorps hage (near Borgholm) — A nature reserve with rich deciduous woodland. Famous for Collared Flycatcher, Hawfinch, and Wood Warbler in May-June. White-tailed Eagles often soar overhead.

Kapelludden (east coast) — Shallow bay with lighthouse and ruins of St. Birgitta’s chapel. Strong for resting waders and seabirds year-round.

Stora Rör (west coast) — The narrowest point of the Kalmar Strait (~3 km). A dedicated birder windbreak with information boards makes this the top spot for watching seabird migration. Best in early morning.

Further Afield

Ölands Norra Udde (northern tip, Långe Erik lighthouse) — Prime April-May spring migration. Small birds arrive on a broad front and gather in bushes.

Stenåsa (southeast) — Open farmland and coast with a bird tower. Waders, ducks, geese, and raptors in spring and autumn.

Möckelmossen — Autumn crane roosts, a spectacular sight.

Best Seasons

SeasonWhat to See
April-MayPeak spring migration, Eider flocks, arriving waders, songbirds in full voice
June-AugustBreeding Avocets, Little Terns, Nightingales, Hobbies

Early morning is best for most sites. Raptors are most active 10:00-15:00.

Practical Tips

  • Bring binoculars — essential for Öland birding. A spotting scope is valuable at shorebird sites.
  • Bird hides and towers are provided at most major sites.
  • The Merlin Bird ID app and eBird hotspot maps help identify species and find recent sightings.
  • Ölands Ornitologiska Förening organises guided birding walks during peak season (~50 SEK/person).

Even non-birders will enjoy the atmosphere at Beijershamn or Stora Rör — the landscape alone is worth the visit.
