A Rare Spring Jewel

Arontorpsrosen — also known as våradonis (Adonis vernalis) — is a bright yellow wildflower that blooms on Öland in April and May. In the Nordic countries, this striking plant grows only on Öland, Gotland, and Bornholm, making it one of the rarest wildflowers you can see in Sweden.
The signature viewing spot is Arontorp Nature Reserve, about 25-30 km south of Borgholm, where the flower grows on a lime-rich meadow called Arontorpsängen. Carl Linnaeus first documented the species in Sweden during his Öland journey in 1741, and the poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt later immortalised it as “arontorpsrosen.”
What Makes It Special
The flowers open only on sunny days — they close in rain and evening shade, so timing your visit on a warm, clear day is key. Each bright yellow bloom is a miniature sun against the spring-green grass.
Despite its beauty, the våradonis has had a difficult history. The meadow was ploughed as cropland in the 1800s and the species nearly disappeared. Only plants growing next to protruding limestone blocks survived. Today the meadow is carefully managed — grass is mown annually to prevent overgrowth — and the flower is legally protected (fridlyst) in Sweden. Picking, digging up, or disturbing the plants is strictly prohibited.
The plant is pollinated by sand bees that nest in nearby sandy ground, while meadow ants help spread the seeds. It is also poisonous — it contains cardiac glycosides and was used medicinally in ancient times.
