A Renaissance Castle on the Mainland

Kalmar slott (Kalmar Castle) is one of Sweden’s best-preserved Renaissance castles, sitting right on the waterfront in Kalmar — just a 40-minute drive across the Öland Bridge from the house. This is where the Kalmar Union was formed in 1397, uniting Sweden, Norway, and Denmark under one monarch.

The castle’s history stretches back to around 1180, when a defence tower was built to protect against pirates. Over the centuries it grew into a mighty medieval fortress, then was transformed into an elegant Renaissance palace by the Vasa kings in the 1500s. The interiors are remarkably well preserved — the King’s Chamber features original 1560s marquetry including the oldest known depiction of the castle, and the Golden Hall has a magnificent coffered ceiling that is one of the finest 16th-century examples in the Nordics.

What to See

The castle is full of atmosphere, from grand royal state apartments to the dungeon and castle church. Exhibitions change throughout the year, and all guided tours are included in the admission ticket. In summer, “Barnens Slott” (Children’s Castle) offers outdoor activities like jousting, archery, theatre, and treasure hunts for kids.

The Castle Restaurant serves lunch and coffee, and you can picnic in the outer courtyard. Kalmar’s charming old town on Kvarnholmen island is a short walk away with shops, cafés, and the Kalmar Cathedral.
