Borgholm is a small summer town, but it punches above its weight when it comes to fika — the Swedish ritual of coffee and pastries that’s more social event than caffeine hit. Here are the spots worth knowing about.

In Town

Nya Conditoriet

Storgatan 28 — The classic. A traditional Swedish konditori (pastry shop) with a 1950s retro interior, proper pastry counter, and White Guide listing. Famous for their cinnamon buns, cakes, and sandwiches. Also serves soup and light lunch. One of the few spots likely open year-round (Mon-Fri 9-18, Sat 9-16 — check before visiting).

Xentas Kaffebar

Storgatan 7 — Borgholm’s first dedicated specialty coffee bar, opened in 2025. They rotate beans from Swedish roasteries, ground fresh per cup. Also serves food and cocktails. The serious coffee spot in town. Rated 5.0/5 on TripAdvisor.

Våran Bakgård

Västra Kyrkogatan (just left of the church) — A hidden courtyard café tucked between houses, described by locals as “Borgholms bästa fik” (Borgholm’s best café). Instagram-popular and genuinely charming — the kind of place you feel lucky to stumble upon. Light lunch and classic fika. Summer only.

Vida Café & Bistro

Between Norra Hallen and Trotzighallen — A spacious café with a rooftop terrace overlooking Kalmarsund. Worth it for the sea view alone. Bistro-style food alongside coffee. Seasonal.

Just Outside Borgholm

Kaffetorpet (Solliden Palace)

~2 km from town — A charming old cottage café in the grounds of the royal summer residence, with staff in period clothing. The most-reviewed café in the area. The setting is unique — fika next to the royal palace gardens. Open during Solliden’s summer season only.

Ölands Karameller Café & Karamellkokeri

~20 km east in Bredsättra — A handmade caramel factory in a former village school, with a café alongside. Watch candy being made the traditional way and pick up locally made caramels. Worth the drive if you’re exploring the east coast.

Practical Tips

  • Most cafés are seasonal — open roughly May through September. Always check current hours before visiting (Instagram/Facebook is usually more current than websites).
  • Nya Conditoriet is your best bet outside summer season.
  • Dog-friendly cafés are common on Öland.
  • Borgholm is small enough for café-hopping — Våran Bakgård, Nya Conditoriet, and Xentas are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
  • Fika is best enjoyed slowly. Order a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) or slice of cake with your coffee and take your time.
